General Features of the Femur The femur is the thigh bone , and it spans from the hip to the knee. It is classified as a long bone and has three main parts: the proximal end, the shaft, and the distal end. Proximal End The proximal end of the femur consists of the head, neck, and the greater and lesser trochanters. Head The head of the femur is a large, smooth, and rounded structure that articulates with the acetabulum of the pelvic bone , forming the hip joint.
